Day 5. Part Two
I left Coolgardie Caravan Park late in the morning with the wind coming at me strongly from the North East. As i rode down the main street i could see the sign toward Norseman and for brief moment i contemplated on turning with the wind , but I knew it was only a trap. I took a photo of the famous Pepper Tree if not one of its off spring and rode off wondering.

This is the tree 40years ago Jim and I left our bags and went to the road house for a meal when we hitched over to Melbourne and back. Unfortunately when we returned it was pitch black and we crawled around on our knees for hours till we found them. The turn off is just further on in the horizon. O.K it doesn't mean much maybe to you but you had to be there. Our sleeping bags where a towel each and I've never seen a human being curl itself up as much as the old boy on all fours. The way i kept warm was by sprinting up and down the road fully clothed for hours till the sun came up.
I arrived in Kalgoolie around 2pm and booked into a nice Hotel but very expensive one because they have a couple of girls doing the cleaning continuously. They told me its 700 a night so i thought i would spoil myself as i needed cleaning
The front facade I thought was very classy, it got me going.
No ,thats not true, I'm staying at the Railway Hotel across from my new 300 wheel bike and pulling out Thursday 1.40am and arriving at 1.40am Port Augusta. The price for the trip is $400 which is about the equivalent of what i spend at one roadhouse visit.
Now a lot of people are probably wondering how my state of mind is, not doing the Nullabour stretch.
Well if you are, or not ,let me tell you that I am completely at rest with it as i thought long and hard about the decision. It is a disappointment which i created myself by putting a time limit on the trip and should of known better. But imagine, it would be catastrophic to miss the Melbourne Cup and spoil other peoples holiday plans for the sake of my selfishness in wanting to do it for the fourth time.

After talking with Shane K tonight with his concerns of my mental state(lol) we discussed another attempt together as a bonding brotherly thing and he actually got a chubby so you can never say no.
So tomorrow is another day in Paradise, downtown Kal and i will probably just hang under some shady tree with my friends who i waved to as i came into town.
Take care and God Bless you
Going for the rattler tells me you're a man of wisdom. And proves you're not really suffering obsessive-compulsive disorder....but the "God Bless you" has got me worried...did the Gideon's leave one of their bibles in the Deluxe Shithouse, or on the bedside table in Questa Casa perhaps?
ReplyDeleteKalgoorlie...what fond memories I have of that place...always happy to go back for a visit. If you can try to spend some time at the Kalgoorlie Museum and take a ride out to the super pit - wont be long and the whole town will be dug up at the rate they are pulling the rocks out of the ground. I think it will be about 30 degrees tomorrow so you might
ReplyDeleteeven get a chance to go to the local pool. ...although being school holidays not sure I would recommend that. Check when the two up is on as you dont wont to ride all the way out there and find it is only open on Fridays! Good decision to take the train...although we still expect to get a daily blog. Not sure if you have a cabin on the train but if you do make sure you lock the door as strange things can happen on trains...will look forward to hearing the stories as no doubt there will be many.
Did you mean God Bless You or "Praise the Lord"???
Jacket, fond memories 'of that place'?? Pray tell, more!
DeleteGood morning mate
ReplyDeleteI just been out of the loop yesterday, but thought at,d better check the blog before the morning Dunsborough ride.
You have already been around the paddock so good on you for taking the time to enjoy the ride without the nagging clock spoiling the experience.
Never heard the slept under the pepper tree story but pretty amazing its still there.
Well done there Grantis-enjoy the train ride n see you at the other end.
Jono n kk
What big news Grant but yes I totally understand. When I was out on my new "eternity bike" yesterday I got off and WALKED up a hill and it was a lot easier than trying to ride up it when I was not feeling mentally up to the challenge. The sky didn't fall in and it probably didn't take too much longer anyway. We'll look forward to meeting a relaxed and coherent Grant Kelly when he arrives in Ballarat!
ReplyDeleteA holiday in Kalgoorlie, interesting. You'll be exhausted.
ReplyDeleteLots of pics in the train and of the train and variable landscape out of it, too. Does it still stop often to re-water? Can you take bike into your cabin?
Can you set out a rough new timetable for we East-Staters to look at?
Fantastic news!
ReplyDeleteYou are exhibiting a rare skill these days: common sense! It's still the best way to come at a problem. I had been looking at the calendar, weather forecasts and thinking: there will be a blur racing down the highway past Mildura that will be Grant with a deadline. Now, there will be time for bike riding, catching up, exploring, new sights. Well worth the decision to make the most of the last 1000 kms.
Looking forward to our reunion now that I know it will be longer than 10 minutes. Enjoy the journey wherever it takes you, look out the window in the middle of the Nullabor and remind yourself that there are a lot of ways to live a life.
Well done coach is that soy 7. Hey there was a escape from graylands last week he Is in kalgoorlie have they caught you yet lol. All is going well here clear your mind and go find yourself happy cycling. Were all behind you boss.WATERBOY
ReplyDeleteI'm here big guy, worried about Jacket remembering 'that place' Questa Casa?
ReplyDeleteAs my previous blog, poke the 'Spot' out the window so I can get my daily fix, all I can say about the next week is ENJOY, but don't forget to keep the great unwashed up-to-date when you can, looking forward to a new adventure of a different type. My buddy has just done the trip and loved it.
Cheers,
Well written Grant. Good reading.
ReplyDelete$400 bucks to Port Augusta?? You could have gone to Bali and return for that! Did you tell em it is just a train?
Everyone (Perth people) - Grant rang to say there's a chance he might be in Ch 7 news tonight at 6pm, apparently the CH7 crew were filming whilst the cops were speaking to him re: the escapee mentioned by 'Symsy' in the comments above...
ReplyDeleteJust did a close up on the tyres of the bike outside the establishent.
ReplyDeleteAre both tyres flat?
